All Moonlight kits will come partially assembled (with weight installed, daughterboard, and daughterboard cable properly routed), so the installation process is fairly streamlined for the buyer. However, for the sake of completeness, below are the full installation steps:
- Start with just the keyboard case
- Install the daughterboard
Install 2x brass screws. Do not over tighten, brass is a soft metal.
- Install the daughterboard cable and route it along this cable management channel
- While keeping the cable in the channel (feel free to temporarily tape it down along the inside case surface if it makes it easier), install the weight
Install 4x torx screws
- The cable should be almost entirely hidden at this point, with just the end connector and some slack visible from the top. Your cases should come shipped like this.
The cable should be entirely invisible from the bottom.
- Start with the PCB
Install stabilizers onto the PCB
Position the plate over the PCB
Install switches into the plate and PCB assembly. Solder if needed. In the example below, we are going with a Tsangan layout, split backspace, and split right shift.
- Wrap the included o-ring along the perimeter of the above assembly.
Make sure that the o-ring sits between the PCB and the plate layers.
- Hold the assembly vertically, and keep it close enough to the keyboard case to press in the daughterboard cable connector. You may want to lay it on a microfiber cloth to minimize the risk of scratching. Included are diagrams of what it should look like, both with the weight and without the weight to make it easier to visualize the cable routing.
- Slowly tilt the PCB/plate assembly until it is almost parallel to the keyboard case, and gently press down on the top portion of the assembly only until you reach the gasket support posts.
The o-ring should lightly sit on these 8 gasket support posts after installation is completed (highlighted below) on the inside of the case.
Once the top half of the assembly is sitting on the gasket support posts, the bottom half of the assembly should be around the bottom bezel of the keyboard case. Using your thumbs, push the o-ring away from you to get it over the bottom edge.
Press down on the assembly until you feel it stop. Do not press down too hard, you might over compress the o-ring. This is the end result, your plate should be parallel to the top surface of the case.
- Flip the case over and install the bumpons
Mount your keycaps, and enjoy!
